Although Reagan was able to mobilize and represent conservatives, and win two terms as president, he also contributed to a sense of a significant difference between the parties and he polarized the electorate more than any president since Kennedy (Schneider 1983: 2200, 2205-2206; Sundquist 1983: 418-424, 444-446; Stone, Rapoport, and Abramowitz 1990). The perception of differences in the policy concerns of the parties continued to increase through the early 1990s (Abramowitz 1994: 644).
